The BFJA is disappointed that under the new Nutrient Profiling Model, the whole Fruit Juice category is now classified as HFSS and the model shifts focus from total sugars to "free sugars" (including those naturally present in fruit juices, smoothies, and purees). We are concerned about the unintended consequences that extend beyond merely stigmatising fruit juice: they will substantially affect a convenient natural option available within a balanced diet which contributes to consumers 5-a day. Reclassifying fruit juice as unhealthy will confuse consumers when it can clearly be part of a healthy, balanced diet with recognised scientific nutritional benefits such folate, vitamin C and fibre.
BFJA is currently working with Government and other stakeholders to promote understanding of the nutritional benefits of fruit juice and increase understanding that reformulating fruit juice is not possible due to strict compositional legal requirements.
British Fruit Juice Association Celebrating the British fruit & vegetable juice industry...
The British Fruit Juice Association (BFJA) represents the interests of those who utilise fruit juice within the United Kingdom. Founded in 1941 by the then Ministry of Food, our role was to ensure the continued supply of high quality juices. Since this time, the organisation has evolved considerably.
The BFJA now provides a focal point for knowledge-sharing, networking, up-skilling and resource-sharing amongst businesses working in the juice industry. The BFJA’s membership is diverse, consisting of fruit juice importers, contract packers, transport and storage professionals, blenders, fruit and vegetable processors, category managers, new product developers, distributors, juice creators and those that bring risk management services to the industry. The BFJA represents businesses who are involved across the entire supply chain of fruit juices that are both large, small and anything in-between, including a number of start-ups.
